Cloughjordan is a beautiful town with its lovely old buildings, the tranquil meadow at its centre and the woods, rivers and bogs surrounding it. It is a little jewel at the very heart of the country, and it deserves to be kept perfect.

..lovely old buildings....

Cloughjordan Tidy Towns group, part of Cloughjordan Community Development,  is made up a small number of volunteers which undertakes projects regularly from early spring to midsummer. The town takes part in the national Tidy Towns Competition, and we have been praised in several of the judges’ reports.

We plant up and look after flower beds on the approach roads to the town and the half-barrels on Main Street. In 2009 we replanted the triangle on the Step Road, removing tired and straggling bushes and replacing them with a silver birch and carpet roses.

In partnership with Iarnród Eireann, the Tidy Towns group has ‘adopted’ the railway station, so we cleared and landscaped the area around the car park and got rid of the weeds. Iarnród Eireann painted the station building at our request, and we painted ‘windows’ on the boards, as well as painting the gates, doors and signs on the station. We also installed and planted up two flower troughs and a large flower bed.

The thinking on what makes a Tidy Town is developing: it is now less about hanging baskets and cobbled lanes and more about sustainable planting, and protection and development of the local heritage. This heritage is natural, architectural and historical. Therefore our latest project is to plan the development of the old cattle-bank side of the railway line to create a park, with a wildlife and wooded walk section. Plans include a possible riverside walk in the future, agricultural heritage installations and cooperation with the ‘walks’ group on the approaches to Knockanacree woods.
